Introduction: In this 3 hour workshop in partnership with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies, we will use water-based printing inks, watercolors and crayons on plexiglass plates and an etching press to learn and experiment with mono printing techniques. We can also use upcycled materials that are thin to create stencils on the prints. Prints can also be reworked with other runs through the press to experiment further with transparency of colors and unexpected combinations.
What you’ll learn: We will use brayers to apply printing inks, or brushes and crayons to draw and paint on the plexiglass plates. Leaves and other up cycled materials can be arranged and become stencils on the plate. Paper is dampened, run through the press and the resulting print can be added to again for a second run through the press. Transparent medium can be added to the ink to learn about color combinations, and to integrate textures.

What you’ll take home: a print on archival paper suitable for a gift or framing, and an expanded knowledge of printmaking and color.
Who this is for: anyone curious about mono printing, a method that is fun to experiment with using different subtractive tools ( q-tips, palette knives, sprays etc.), suitable for beginners to more experienced
Materials provided: printing inks, watercolors, crayons, brayers, plexiglass, rag paper, newsprint, gloves
What to bring: for textures, thin, upcycled materials such as lace, netting, dried leaves, plastic bags. Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting messy.
